The Swiss Gemmological Institute (SSEF) opened the newest laboratory in Basel, which is twice the size of the previous laboratory building. This will significantly increase the volume of services provided by SSEF to the diamond industry.
The laboratory was specially created to ensure the development of SSEF units for the evaluation of diamonds, gems and pearls, as well as maintaining the organization's leading positions in gemological research. In addition, this step will allow SSEF to provide training programs for the diamond industry in Switzerland and throughout Europe.
At the opening ceremony of the new laboratory there were prominent figures in the diamond, jewelry and watch industry.

During the opening ceremony, the Institute held a public presentation of its Automated Spectral Diamond Inspection (ASDI) system that allows analyzing and measuring large amounts of "mele" diamonds less than 3.8 mm in diameter, filtering out imitation stones, possible synthetic diamonds and probable diamonds with HPHT treatment.
