Zimbabwean human rights organization "Natural Resource Management Center" (Centre for Natural Resources Governance, CNRG) argues that the recent statements of the head of the central bank of the country Mangqut John (John Mangudya) treasury losses due to lack of transparency in the diamond sector were made too late.
Local newspaper The Herald quoted Mangqut about "the importance of ensuring transparency and accountability in the diamond industry."
Zimbabwean authorities have previously stated that the extraction of the diamonds will bring in the state treasury about $ 2 billion a year, but it remained a distant dream.
Now miners in Marange (Marange) say that their deposits were depleted.
"We do not know of any production (diamonds) or the level of their export We must improve transparency and accountability for those resources, so we still have to get comprehensive data." - said Mangqut.
"We now call on the government to stop the leakage of resources and to obtain at least part of what is left in Marange," - says Farai Maguwu (Farai Maguwu), head CNRG. The organization calls for transparency of operations in Marange for several years.
He added that the official Harare should impose a moratorium on all mining operations in Marange, and President Robert Mugabe should be to create an independent commission to investigate the illegal financial flows associated with the diamonds from Marange.
He said that in Zimbabwe should conduct a thorough audit of all companies in the Marange diamond, as well as allow the anti-corruption commission to conduct its own investigation, with full access to the territory of the companies and ministries.
